About 2048

Slide numbered tiles to merge matching pairs and reach the legendary 2048. Easy to learn, hard to master.

2048 is a sliding number puzzle built around one rule: when two tiles with the same value meet, they merge into the next value. Every move shifts the whole board, then a new tile appears. The goal is to build a 2048 tile without filling the grid so completely that no legal moves remain. It starts as a calm matching game, but strong runs quickly become about planning space, tile order, and the one move you should not make. The reliable way to play 2048 is to give your largest tile a permanent home in one corner and build a descending chain beside it. That keeps your high values organized and leaves room for smaller tiles to combine. Chasing every available merge is tempting, but it often breaks the board shape you need later. The game rewards patience: set up pairs, preserve an empty lane, and only change direction when it improves the whole board.

2048 sits in our puzzle games lineup. Brain teasers, logic puzzles and word games.

How to play 2048

Use Arrow Keys or swipe to slide every tile. Matching numbers merge into their sum.

  1. Use an Arrow Key or swipe in one direction to move every tile as far as it can go.
  2. When two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile with their combined value.
  3. After each move, a new low-value tile appears on an empty square.
  4. Keep merging equal tiles while leaving enough open cells to maneuver.
  5. Build toward 2048, but keep playing after it if you want to improve your score.
  6. The game ends when the board is full and no adjacent tiles can merge.

Tips for 2048

  • Choose one bottom corner for your largest tile and avoid moving it away from that corner.
  • Keep the row or column beside your corner in descending order so merges feed toward the largest tile.
  • Use three directions most of the time. The fourth direction should be an emergency move, not a habit.
  • Do not take a small merge if it breaks your organized edge and leaves high tiles in the middle.
  • Save empty squares. A board with room to slide is safer than a board with one extra low-value merge.
  • Before each move, check whether it will strand a tile behind a larger number.
